Endodontic is a field that deals with the internal structure of the tooth. Generally, instead of pulling the damaged tooth, it is aimed to save the tooth by cleaning the existing infection and caries in the tooth..

What is Endodontics ?

Many years ago, direct tooth extraction was performed when teeth were damaged or rotted. Endodontists save the tooth by intervening in the damaged area with different procedures before tooth extraction. Endodontic procedures are the whole treatment that covers the inner tissues of the teeth, which we call the pulp.

What are The Most Common Endodontic Procedures?

The most common treatment is root canal treatment. It is a priority recovery method when infection occurs in the canals holding the pulp. There is more than one reason for the infection to occur, a few of them are; gap teeth, continuous treatment of the tooth, wrong tooth treatment, etc.

If left untreated, the infection increases, and serious toothache, abscess, gum swelling, inability to eat, tooth loss that will occur in later times occurs. These diagnoses vary from person to person, so problems that cannot be noticed can be revealed by rontgen scanning under the supervision of a dentist.

In the treatment of the canal, the infected pulp is removed and the roots are cleaned and the treatment is carried out. During the procedure, the patient is anesthetized and does not feel any pain. In canal treatment, the procedure usually results in a single stage, but it can still vary depending on the patient's condition.

Sometimes root canal treatment is enough to save infected teeth, but in some cases it may not be enough to heal only the tissues. In such cases, surgical endodontics is required. This procedure is used in infected teeth if there is a chronic condition. Under local anesthesia, surgical intervention is performed on the inner bone part of the tooth.

Process After Endodontic Treatment

As with other dental procedures, the patient may feel tenderness and pain during chewing and biting after treatment. It is part of the healing process. Sensitivity and pain are completely gone within 2-3 days.

The tooth with root canal treatment can be utilized for years. However, if the person does not pay attention to oral and dental hygiene, he may face the risk of re-infection and tooth decay may occur. Root canal treatment is a repeatable procedure. If the treatment fails, the tooth roots are emptied, cleaned and filled again.

Care Recommendations After Endodontic Treatment

Care after endodontic treatment is very important because the tooth carries a risk of infection until the healing process. Since anesthesia is applied during the treatment, the patient should wait for the numbness to pass before eating or drinking anything after the treatment, because it may damage the cheek and the treated tooth during mouth numbness. Suggestions for post-treatment care:

  • Teeth should be brushed twice a day with a soft toothbrush.
  • Hard foods should be avoided, soft foods should be preferred.
  • Controls should not be disrupted, should be in contact with the physician or patient consultant
